Devotional: “You Reap What You Sow” from a Biblical Standpoint
“You Reap What You Sow”
“You’ll reap what you sow.” Often growing up we hear this phrase passed down through the generations. What a wonderful thing it is when we reap the good things we’ve sown, but what about the bad? The Bible talks in detail about reaping what you’ve sown, good or bad.
In Galatians, it reads, “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life“. If we sow desires of our flesh which desires things not of God we will reap corruption, but if we sow of the Spirit, we will reap everlasting life.
Our flesh is capable of many wicked things. Only when we live through the Spirit denying our fleshly desires may we live to please God. This year I challenge you to evaluate if it’s your flesh, or the Spirit, dictating your life. If it is the Spirit, you can expect to reap a harvest of goodness and grace.
If it is your flesh, go to God and start making changes in your life. Change typically does not happen overnight. It may take time to get rid of bad habits, but if you start today, you have taken a step towards progress. And, in time of serving you will be due to reap your season of harvest.
Reflection:
Are you serving God or the ruler of this world? What does your heart desire, things of this world, or the things that God desires? Are you planting seeds that will grow hope, love and peace, or seeds that will bring about destruction and chaos? When you reap what you sow will you be glad or disappointed?
Prayer:
Dear Lord,
We come to you today to ensure my heart’s desires align with Your desires. I want to reap a harvest of abundance and joy. Please help me and convict me with anything I may be sowing that is not of You and Your Word. Expose and bring to light the things that I may be deceived about.
Weigh my heart down with heavy conviction and set me free of the things that are holding me back from truly reaping a bountiful harvest. As Your Word says in Galatians, let me not grow weary of doing good for in due time I will reap a harvest if we do not lose heart.
I want to continue to do good in Your name. But, I also know Galatians says I shouldn’t be deceived for You are not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Please bless me with the wisdom of knowing if I am sowing things in my life that will bring about destruction.
Guide my steps and shine a light on the path before me of which I am to take. I need your guidance every day. Forgive me for anything I have planted that is not of your Spirit and help me to endure through the harvest it has brought.
Going forward help me to only plant things of the Spirit so that I may bring glory to Your name and Kingdom. For I know that:
I am Chosen.
I am Called.
I am Fulfilled.
I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.
And because you sit on the throne, now and forever, may I go forward only sowing seeds of the Spirit that are pleasing to you.
Standing on Your Word and Your truth, it is in Your Holy Name we pray,
Amen
